Running head: RICE VERSUS WHEAT CULTURES IN CHINA 1 Rice versus Wheat Cultures in China: An Investigation into Self Enhancement and Cultural Tightness

چکیده
Talhelm et al. (2014) hypothesized that Chinese from northern provinces (traditionally wheatgrowing regions) are more independent or less interdependent than those from southern provinces (traditionally rice-growing regions). One reliable index of independence is selfenhancement, which is when a person estimates that a small percentage of people are better than oneself. We asked Chinese college students recruited in Beijing to estimate the percentage of their classmates who would be higher than themselves on three evaluative dimensions (competence, independence, and interdependence) and found the northern participants to be systematically more self-enhancing (reporting smaller percentage estimates) as compared to their southern counterparts. Unexpectedly, the northern participants reported their home regions to be tighter in the enforcement of social norms than the southern participants did. The results were discussed in terms of characteristics of the student populations in the Beijing area.

متن کاملHost and Cropping System Shape the Fusarium Population: 3ADON-Producers Are Ubiquitous in Wheat Whereas NIV-Producers Are More Prevalent in Rice
In recent years, Fusarium head blight (FHB) outbreaks have occurred much more frequently in China. The reduction of burning of the preceding crop residues is suggested to contribute to more severe epidemics as it may increase the initial inoculum. In this study, a large number of Fusarium isolates was collected from blighted wheat spikes as well as from rice stubble with perithecia originating ...

They demonstrate that a measure of collectivism correlates with the proportion of cultivated land devoted to rice paddies, which ...
متن کاملEffect of heavy haze and aerosol pollution on rice and wheat productions in China
In China, regional haze pollution is a serious environmental problem. The impact on ecosystem, however, is not clearly understood. This study investigates the effect of regional haze pollution on the yields of rice and wheat in China. The spatial and temporal distributions of aerosol optical depth (AOD) show high particulate pollution in the North China Plain region, Yangtze River Delta region,...
